Predicting Buried Archaeology

Understanding the character and potential of buried archaeology in aggregate bearing landscape is a significant preoccupation of archaeological resource managers.  Recent research at Vista has sought to develop predictive modelling techniques that will assist in determining archaeological potential at a landscape scale, rather than simply predicting site locations.

A PowerPoint presentation, and a short article in The Society for Archaeological Sciences Bulletin explain our work, which is based on an adapted weighted map-layer approach (cf Brandt et at 1992, described on WebCT).
