In the first week, the module covers advanced GIS skills, in particular raster-based spatial modelling in ArcGIS, as well as some more advanced aspects of surface modelling. In week 2 we look in-depth at archaeological remote sensing using airborne and satellite sensor systems.
It's well worth getting ahead of the field by downloading a demo copy of Golden Software's Surfer Surface Modelling software. You might also care to load up the hard disk with Jo Wood's excellent and free Landserf surface modelling and analysis package and Saga GIS, all of which will get some mention. In terms of reading we are now firmly in the realm of journal papers for keeping abreast of the most recent developments. Take a look at Archaeological Prospection and Journal of Archaeological Science for the best new work on both remote sensing and spatial modelling. This is a fast-paced module with lots to investigate and learn, so if you have time a little reading in advance will be helpful. The reading list is live on WebCT from today.
